Information Deisng examples

Examples of information design:

It is iTunes and iTunes Store.
This application is well sorted. Left column is sorted by "category*" such as Library (Movie, Music, etc...) , Store, Genius, and Playlist.
Therefore use can find what they need with great efficiency.
Right big column is Store. Sender(Apple) sorted the information and make it easier to find needed information to encourage consumer to buy.

It is a rail map of CityRail.
All lines are used different coulors.(maybe its sorted by "Location*") All the timetables for every line are the same colour as the map shows. So sender can inform effectively, and receiver can recognize which line they need to take easily.

Shown above is iPhone history time line. It is sorted by "Time". It is providing knowledge which can easily be followed. Sender can give target the right knowledge and receiver can learn/understand very quickly because it is arranged well.

*Richard Saul Wurman insists in his book (2007), there are only 5 ways to sort information: Location, Alphabet, Time, Category, and Hierarchy.

Information Design definition

What is information Design?
It has very wide sense I assume.

“Information design is the integrator that brings other disciplines together to create excellent information solutions (Knemeyer.D, 2003*).”
"information design is the defining, planning, and shaping of the contents of a message and the environments in which it is presented, with the intention to satisfy the information needs of the intended recipients (IIID, 2000**)”

Since information technology developed dramatically, the amount of information considerably increased. These days, it is not too much to say that having good information is biggest advantage.
However, quality of information got worse, because everyone can send message to the world thank to internet and computer. Hence, consumer need to judge the information, as well as information provider has to be careful to send a message to be received as what they are supposed to mean.
So I think Information design is to sort out and arrange the information for both sender and receiver's sake.

Examples of great web design

Interactive design is highly likely discussed in web based society. Especially, on the web site.
Due to such huge development in information technology, the amount of information people perceive increased considerably. Then user became to need to pick the information rather than just be passive and take all of it.
Therefore, user has to be able to access the information what they want.

Here are some examples of good design website.

Amazon.com is an American-based multinational electronic commerce company.
Its website is well designed and has nice interface. User can find the products by typing keyword or choosing category. Also in the middle they have news, and personalized recommended product news.
Good interactive design reduces stress and encourage consumers to purchase.

Following those 2 website has got American Design Award of web design.
Common points of all website that i have shown is that they are simple and not too much information. they have very simple categories therefore user can find the information easier and effectively.

Interactive Design

Interactive Design is defined "the structure and behavior of interactive systems. Interaction Designers strive to create meaningful relationships between people and the products and services that they use, from computers to mobile devices to appliances and beyond.  (IxDA, 2004)." by Interaction Design Association (IxDA).

Interactive system can be found in all places, products and services because it is all about relationship to human being. Therefore interactive design should exist in everywhere where the relations are. For example, on the keyboard that you are using (think about why we have tiny projection on F and J key), emergency exit sign (why is the colour of sign green, not red?) and so on.

Relationship between people and products has became much more important these days. Manufacturing technology has less space to develop compare to the old time. Then I assume attentions, that used to be paid for efficient manufacturing, has shifted to interaction and people talk about it more often than ever.

How to make a toast (Planning tools for interaction)

Steps to make a toast

1. Place it on the stable, hard and flat surface table
2. Check the toaster power cable if it is plugged in. Yes/No
3. Turn on the wall power outlet.
4. Check the expire date of the bread
5. Check the toast if it is going off
6. Set the cooking timer dial 3-5
7. Place the bread in the toaster.
8. Depress the lever and wait for ejection
9. Prepare a plate
10. Check the darkness of the toast if it is medium or dark brawn. Yes/No
11. Wait for bread to get cool enough to touch.
12. Take it out and place on the plate

What is "Web 2.0" ?

The term of web 2.0 was defined as “The web as a platform (O’Reilly, 2004)” at the first ‘web 2.0 conference’ preliminary opening talk by John Battelle and Tim O’Reilly, in 2004.

What does it mean?

It does not just mean offering the old application through the network like software as a service, but they indicate that “it means building applications that literally get better the more people use them, harnessing network effects not only to acquire users, but also to learn from them and build on their contributions.” in their report that was issued by web 2.0 summit.

Moreover, it has been understood among the people as web based application that allows users to have interaction such as blogs, social networking sites, video sharing sites and so on.

Good examples of web 2.0 are

1. Blog (i.e Blogger/WordPress)

Blog is not only simple article but has good interaction.

It does not sound web 2.0 if blog is just like one user post an article on the web, then all the other can read. What makes blog very interactive is that reader can leave comments on the article or use trackback and write about the article in their blog.

2.Youtube

Youtube is the one of the most popular website.

People can share the information on the web through movies. Significant point is that everyone can upload movies and watch and leave the comment interactively.

3.Facebook

Facebook is the good representation of the social-networking site.

Users can connect each other and show their thoughts and share information interactively for example, pictures and movies that they took together. Also they can make up groups and join to communicate each other.
